Question [Startup Ideas] Do you think it will flop?

I'm going to start a local academic social network. Basically, I'm targeting high school to college students and as well as professors. I'm envisioning a network where students can communicate with their teachers and professors, where students can participate in forums and common-interest groups, where students can promote their orgs and events.

It will be a Facebook with a forum in simple words.

Yes, I know it is ambitious. But I really want to do it. Though, before I continue, let me tell you that I am just an incoming civil engineering student.

Anyway, I have some plans already and the coding is almost done. It looks good already. I'm just not yet ready to launch it because of financial problems.

I'm thinking of launching it before school starts. I'm also thinking of launching it first in major colleges and universities in Metro Manila. The idea is to have a grip first in these schools, then launch in key provinces.

The marketing strategy is done. It's not full-proof but I think it's gonna work. However, my biggest problem is how I am gonna earn from this to maintain the network. Certainly, there will be ads but I do not know how much to charge. I might also put up a store where we're gonna sell shirts with designs inspired by schools and stuffs. I already know how to handle that because my friends and I already have a small shirt line.

The hosting is expensive. Really, really expensive for me. As I've said, I'm only 16.

Anyway, can you give ideas and suggestions? And where can I find people who can work with me. Not for me but with me. I would be comfortable if they are at around my age, too.

I can work with you. But I can't guarantee you my full attention. Coz' I'm also in the process of having a startup.

About the cost, I think ads, and other stuffs plus your "baon" or school allowance are good enough to cover some hosting and miscellaneous fees. Konting tipid nga lang.

Don't worry if it will flop. Just execute and launch it. If it will flop, it's alright. you lose one, but you gain some. Go back where it flop and redo it. Launch it again. There's no harm in trying.

I'm 19 by the way. And I'm a BS CS graduate.

Yeah, I've read that you're gonna have a startup. Good luck!

Anyway, as much as I hate to turn you down, I have to. See, I won't be able to take it if I know that I'm gonna consume your time. We all want you to succeed. There are only few Filipino startups so yeah. You really need to focus on your goal-- your goal alone. Anyway, thank you for the encouragement! At least, I know someone has my back. LOL.

Balitaan mo nalang ako. I'm also excited on your startup! If you need help just message me. Or you can also email me (jolo@jpbalb.in). I'm very willing to help!
Pero buti nga ikaw you still have "baon" or allowance to spend, ako wala na.

Good luck. And maybe you can also attend some tech events!

I think I need help. But it ain't a big task, if you have time, can you help me to beta test the site? I'm almost done customizing some of the codes to fit my needs and I'm also done designing it. Though, I guess, you will see some familiar color schemes (not Facebook) and designs.

You can PM me probably next Wednesday to get details and other stuffs, if you're okay with it. I just have this problem where a certain menu won't show up.

Two things that I'm learning as I build my own startup:

    1) Learn from the experience of mentors (which coincidentally is my own startup). I think Terence Pua of Insync fame tried this before in eskwela.com though I don't know what happened to it. Get in touch with him
    2) Validate the idea and share it. I use this tool for that: http://leanspirit.com/leancanvas/
More on how to use it here:

How to create your Lean Canvas http://leancanvas.com/LeanCanvas.pdf

That last one, I use myself and it's great for proving and disproving ideas. Maybe these two tips will help you out in your startup journey.

Paolo, I think you have what it takes to create a startup so keep at it!

Long time no post. Anyway, I'm done with it! At last, the sleepless nights paid off well. But I still cannot launch it. I'm still broke. LOL! I bought a new laptop which is required by my school for next year. Anyway, if any of you is willing to like invest, send me a message here or contact me at paolo.uy@email.com. I can show you screen caps, or if you're really serious, I can let you test the site.
