Below are ways to monetize a project or startup In order:

1 - Donations (Entry Level)
2 - Subscription Revenue (Make Money through your Subscribers by Testing Strategies)
3 - Contextual Advertisement (e.g. Google Adsense, Chitika, etc)
4 - Affiliate Marketing (Look for affiliates and make a deal with them)
5 - Selling a Product (If you have the product sell it)
6 - Direct Ad Sales (If someone would like to advertise in your site, create a proposal that you would like to advertise their product/services buy selling their product. NOTE: This is for hardcore internet marketers)
